Engineers Ireland Conservation Group, RIAI & SCSI 2024 Seminar: Appropriate Thermal Upgrade for Historic Structures (4207)< back to trainings

Location: Engineers Ireland, Clyde Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

Organised in conjunction with the RIAI and SCSI, this seminar is an opportunity to engage with experts working on the complex and essential topic of historic structures energy use, and to discuss the collaborative role each building profession and trade has in managing the appropriate thermal upgrade of such buildings. We will join building professionals and skilled practitioners to explore how we can best bring our historic building stock successfully into this energy aware period.

Description

Seminar Overview

The cultural value of Ireland’s historic structures is difficult to overstate. As part of our lived environments, these structures constitute the backdrop on which rural and urban identities are formed. Yet as working structures these buildings have an energy requirement that's under scrutiny as carbon emissions become a global issue.

Organised in conjunction with the RIAI and SCSI, this seminar will provide an opportunity to engage with experts working to tackle the complex and essential topic of structures energy use, and discuss the collaborative role each building profession and trade has in managing the appropriate thermal upgrade of such buildings.

Ireland has set ambitious targets to reach reduced greenhouse-gas emissions and meet international commitments on climate change mitigation. Improving energy efficiency in the existing building stock is key to meeting these commitments. While the emphasis on the energy retrofit of buildings is important, the integrity of our historic buildings needs to be respected when changes are being made. The energy performance of most of our historic and traditional buildings can be improved, helping them continue to be viable, both now and into the future.

Historic buildings form a large proportion of Ireland's building stock. They are often of architectural and historic interest, frequently protected structures and generally of solid walled construction. It is essential that any thermal upgrading does not undermine their special aesthetic character or disrupt the way their fabric acts as a building envelope and responds to our climate. In most cases, a balance can be found between protecting the building's heritage value and intrinsic fabric and introducing energy saving interventions that lessen adverse environmental impact, reduce building energy costs and improve occupant comfort thus ensuring the long-term viability of these historic buildings.

The purpose of this seminar is to look at the latest legislation and research in Ireland along with examples of projects across Ireland. It will bring together building professionals and skilled practitioners to explore as a team how we might best understand the thermal response of, and bring our historic building stock successfully into this energy aware period.
